3 Basic Golf Ball Structures

Golf is one most popular sport in the world. One important things in this sport is golf ball. In fact, 5000 patents were approved in the last two decades alone, making the golf ball a pretty smart piece of technology. This wide range of choice and technologies can make choosing the right ball almost confusing. For get started, here are 3 basic golf ball structures:

1. The Two-piece Ball

A two-piece golf ball has a compact inner core surrounded by a hard outer shell. Typically, the two-piece ball is used as a “distance” ball and is designed to travel far, but its drawback is that it can sometimes be unwieldy and harder to control than other balls. Usually, the harder and more compact the inner core of a two-piece ball, the further this ball will go.

2. The Three-piece Ball

Many golfers like three-piece balls because of how they feel and the way the balls spin, giving the golfer better control. A three-piece ball is usually made of a Balata or Balata-like shell that’s softer, followed by a fabric cushion designed to absorb the impact of a hit and finally a hard and compact inner core for distance.

Most pro golfers use Balata-covered balls, preferring the improved control and spin as well as the way a three-piece ball is less likely to bounce right off a green.

3. The Multi-layer Ball

The multi-layer ball is your catchall and great for beginners or golfers who are just hitting a few balls at the driving range. The multi-layer balls have alternating layers of softer materials that cover a compact and hard core. This design is intended to combine the soft spin of the Balata with the distance of a two-piece ball, but sometimes simply sacrifices the benefits of both.

The best golf ball for a beginner

Probably the best golf ball for a beginner golfer is a two-piece ball. With a beginner’s weak swing golf, the two-piece ball will give you greater distance. Once you have your swing down, then focus on the control and direction that a 3-piece of multi-layer ball provides.
